Carlie McEwan loves many things. She loves being a witch. She loves her town of Halfway, NY – a tourist destination nestled on the shores of an Adirondack lake. Carlie loves her enormous familiar, Gus, who is 25 pounds of judgmental Maine Coon cat, and she positively worships her grandmother, a witch of incredible power and wisdom. Carlie spends her days cooking at the finest – and only – real diner in town, and her life is a balance between magic and the mundane, just as she likes it.

When a blond stranger sits at the diner counter and calls her by name, that balance is gone. Major Pickford asks Carlie to lead him into the deepest shadows of the forest to find a mythical circle of chestnut trees, thought lost to forever to mankind. There are ghosts in the forest, and one of them cries out to Carlie across the years. Come find me.

Danger, like the shadowed pools of the forest, can run deep. The danger is real, but Carlie’s magic is born of a pure spirit. With the help of Gus, and Gran, and a rugged cop who really does want to save the world, she’ll fight to bring a ghost home, and deliver justice to a murderer who hides in the cool, mysterious green of a forest gone mad with magic.

New Year’s Resolutions And The Virtues of a Book Blogger

Happy New Year everyone!

I hope you had a great party, or a wonderful, cozy evening. Whatever you prefer more. But the thing is, all of us know that in truth, nothing much has changed from yesterday to today. I’m still sitting at my laptop and try to study, you might still be reading the same book as you did yesterday.

The only difference is really, that some of us set up a few (or lots of ) new year’s resolutions. But who can actually live according to them throughout the next year? The truth is, some might not even make it till the end of January.

Be it more sports, less smoking, losing the five pounds you gained in December or something else, successful are the least of us. That’s why I actually didn’t bother for quite some time to come up with any resolutions at all. I’m just not that disciplined ( except if I want to study, I just love my books ❤ ) I’ll show you what I want to do better in 2017 – and how I’m going to accomplish it!

This year, I want to change a few small things:

  1. I want to do some sports
  2. I want to eat a little bit healthier
  3. I want to take better care of myself
  4. Get rid of my TBR mountain

  1. In 2016, I had a big surgery and wasn’t able to do any sport at all. Before, I was fine and I went to the gym about twice a week. I want to go to the gym again, and do a few short exercises a few days a week at home. My cousin will get married this summer and I want to look my best.
  2. After the same surgery, I couldn’t really move or lift, well a purse, so me and my bf only ever bought things when there was really nothing left in the house. Chips, cans, bread and bread, bread, bread! I want to eat more fruits and less milk, cheese and eggs, maybe even less salty.
  3. 2016 was a good year, even though I had extreme health issues. Everything turned out fine in the end, but I think I should try not to stress and fuss over things. I want to try to take more ME time during the week and do more with friends.
  4. It’s growing way too fast

  1. I started this morning, after sleeping in, with five minutes of biceps, triceps and back muscle training. I talked to my bf while I did it to not over do it. This will be this first thing every second morning, because when I’m still a little tired and sleepy, I tend not to think so much so I can’t say ‘I have too much to do’. I will always have 5 minutes for that.
  2. We do cheat days every week and I want to start cooking on cheat days instead of eating chips and ice-cream all day. Just things that you normally think have too much calories like burgers, lasagna or chips. But if I make them myself, I can decide what to put in them and how much fat you use. It’s not the healthiest food, but the ingredients will be better. Also, I bought a few veggie spreads so I don’t rely too much on cheese.
  3. I think this will be the hardest part of all. But the first step has already been taken a few days ago. I quit my old job. In Germany, after you quit, you have to work for the company a few weeks longer. So they can find replacement and you a new job. I have written a few applications and I’ll go from there. I hated this job and the people made me angry all the time. I’m searching for a job where I can work fewer hours per week. Then I’ll have more time for my studies and won’t be so stressed out and always behind schedule. I actually hope to read a little more, take a bath sometimes. Nothing special, just more listening to what I want instead of always doing what has to be done.
  4. Read more, of course. But I also want to write a few posts about my TBR to get me going 😀

This is My Genre, Tell Me Yours Book Tag

I was tagged by my friend Debby @ AlwaysBooking!  Her blog is wonderful and her reviews are funny, honest and original. This tag was created by Drew @The Tattooed Book Geek . This tag is to show off your favorite genre, what book got you into that genre, what book would you recommend to someone just starting out in that genre. What a great idea! I just couldn’t resist to do this one 😀

The Rules:

  • Credit the bad ass Drew @The Tattooed Book Geek as the creator of the tag, either use the created tag name graphic or create your own and link back to his blog
  • Answer the questions
  • Tag as many people as you want

The Questions…

What is your favorite Genre?

I think I have many genres I like but the aspect which I can always appreciate is

Who is your favorite author from that genre?

I think there are a lot of great authors. Some are very popular and new, some are already dead and famous or not, but there is a special place in my heart for J.R.R. Tolkien.

What is it about the genre that keeps pulling you back?

I think it’s tha paranormal, the extraodinary that I like about it. The magical worlds of any given time give me the a new perspective on the world and I like to believe that nothing is impossible.

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

What is the book that started your love for your favorite genre?

True to my previous answers, my answer will be The Hobbit. I love this book with all my heart. It got me through some tough things in live because it wasn (not only) an escape, but it offered hope and comfort to me. BTW, Tolkien drew this cover himself.

If you had to recommend at least one book from you favorite genre to a non-reader/someone looking to start that genre, what book would you choose and why?

I think it is obvious that I would recommend The Hobbit. Not only because I like it so much, but also because it is easy to read, with everyday language. It is not overly descriptive as other books in this genre tend to be.

Why do you read?

I think I read for fun, sometimes I like to forget the noisy, the busy, crowded and stressed aspects of life and dive into a world that is different from ours, but not overly so. Sometimes I read about strong people and I know I can be like them if I’m only brave enough. It makes me dare. It makes me forget and remember all the things that are important.

I tag…

Followers, old and new 🙂

Keeana @ KeeaneReads

Anzel @TheBackListBooks

Marteen @ MarteenReadsBooks

Nya @ NyaReads

Sue and Imogen @DoddyAboutBooks

AND YOU! If you want to do this tag, say I tagged you if you like 😉

What are you currently reading?   20161104_080218

Size Matters is a buddy read I’m doing with Debby @ Always Booking, and ACOTAR was in a bookish box she send me. Thanks again Debby, I loved your box ❤ . I’m going through the Harry Potter series again bc I have to analyze the fourth book for a uni class, so I’m listening to the books before the fourth.
